For many of us Montanans, a winter bonfire is a great way to gather on these winter evenings with some warmth outside. Fire pits built with their own permanent structure are popular and are usually integrated into the lawn, landscape or more increasingly the back deck or patio area.
The popular steel fire pit containers sold at several stores are an inexpensive way to enjoy a small fire in your backyard. Make a note however about your new grass killer, that even during winter, a small steel fire pit will quickly melt the snow beneath it, and permanently kill grass directly below the fire’s bottom and the areas surrounding the steel pit. Several people standing around the fire pit will also cause trauma to that area due to the heavy traffic on softened and muddy ground.
